Author Guidelines

Authors are invited to make a submission to this journal. All submissions will be assessed by an editor to determine whether they meet the aims and scope of this journal. Those considered to be a good fit will be sent for peer review before determining whether they will be accepted or rejected.

Before making a submission, authors are responsible for obtaining permission to publish any material included with the submission, such as photos, documents and datasets. All authors identified on the submission must consent to be identified as an author. Where appropriate, research should be approved by an appropriate ethics committee in accordance with the legal requirements of the study's country.

An editor may desk reject a submission if it does not meet minimum standards of quality. Before submitting, please ensure that the study design and research argument are structured and articulated properly. The title should be concise and the abstract should be able to stand on its own. This will increase the likelihood of reviewers agreeing to review the paper. When you're satisfied that your submission meets this standard, please follow the checklist below to prepare your submission.

**Submission Checklist ***

(Required) All submissions must adhere to the following requirements:

General Formatting

  • The submission is original, has not been previously published, and is not currently under consideration by another journal.
  • File Format: Submit a single Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx) containing the Title Page, Manuscript, and References. (No PDFs).
  • Visuals: Do not embed figures or tables within the manuscript text. These must be uploaded as separate supplemental files.
  • Layout: The manuscript must be double-spaced with continuous line numbering.

Cover Letter Must explicitly state:

  • Full article title.
  • The article type selected from the list above.
  • A brief summary of the work’s significance to skin cancer, reconstruction, or aesthetic medicine.
  • AI Declaration: A statement certifying that no generative AI was used to produce the manuscript text or clinical imagery.

Title Page

  • Author List: Full names and academic credentials listed in order of contribution. Use numbered superscripts for affiliations (e.g., Jane Doe, MD¹).
  • Affiliations: Numbered list including Department, Institution, City, State (spelled out), and Country.
  • Corresponding Author: Include full name, institutional mailing address, and professional email.
  • Metadata Block: Explicitly list Word Count, Reference Count, and Figure/Table count.

Abstracts

  • Required for: Original Research, Reviews (Structured), and Clinical Case Reports (Paragraph format).
  • Not Required for: Brief Reports, Compelling Reconstructive Cases, Opinion Viewpoints, and Commentaries.

Figures & Clinical Photography

  • Citations: Bold all mentions of figures in the text. Example: (Figure 1).
  • Uploads: All panels (e.g., 1A, 1B) must be uploaded as individual high-resolution files.
  • Legends: Do not end figure legends with a period.
  • Reconstruction Conundrum: Ensure the pre-operative "Wound" image contains no surgical markings or ink.

References

  • Format: Must follow AMA (American Medical Association) style.
  • Citations: Use superscripted numbers placed after punctuation. Example: "...as noted in the literature.¹”

 

AUTHORSHIP & CLINICAL OVERSIGHT POLICY

Senior Investigator Requirement To maintain the highest standards of clinical accountability and surgical oversight, JSCARS requires that all manuscripts involving Physician Associate (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) authors must include a Medical Doctor (MD or DO) as the senior investigating author. The senior author is expected to have provided oversight for the conceptualization, clinical accuracy, and final review of the work.

Author Contributions All listed authors must have made substantial contributions to the manuscript, including:

  • Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data.
  • Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content.
  • Final approval of the version to be published.
  • Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

Disclosure & Transparency

  • Credentials: Full academic degrees (MD, DO, PhD, PA-C, NP, etc.) must be clearly listed on the title page for all contributors.
  • Attribution: All authors are obliged to provide retractions or corrections of mistakes if detected.
  • AI Compliance: Authors are responsible for ensuring the manuscript complies with the Journal's strict prohibition on generative AI in both text and clinical imagery.
